"CORRECTIVE RAPE" IN SOUTH AFRICA - AND THE CRIMINALS ARE THE SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT!

Received from change.org on 30 December 2010.

Change.org

Spread the word about corrective rape in South Africa

Take Action

Dear Mannie,

Several weeks ago, survivors of "corrective rape" -- a heinous practice in South Africa where lesbians are raped under the guise of "curing" them -- started a petition on Change.org to ask the Minister of Justice to declare corrective rape a hate crime.

It has since become the largest-ever petition on Change.org, and the Chief of Staff at the Ministry of Justice has repeatedly contacted us to complain that they are overwhelmed with the messages coming from every part of South Africa and every corner of the globe. But the minister still refuses to meet with the activists who started the campaign -- Ndumi Funda and the women of the non-profit Lulekisizwe.

Ndumi asked us to pass the note below along to Change.org members. Read the note, then please continue to spread the word by posting on Facebook and forwarding this email to 10 friends.

___________

To Change.org members, editors and most of all to all of you who signed our petition,

We are GOBSMACKED at the response that our petition has received. Our fight against corrective-rape has been going on for so long, under the most harrowing of circumstances, with only a few volunteers to help, and it just seemed that nobody was listening, nobody cared, and our sisters were getting raped, beaten up and murdered without anyone doing anything about it.

In absolute frustration, we decided to write a petition. This was a first for us, and never in our wildest dreams did we imagine that we would get this kind of a response. We did jokingly say that we wanted to crash the Ministry of Justice's servers, but we thought that our petition would get a thousand or so signatures if we were lucky. More than 65,000 signatures later, and the senior Ministry officials we targeted are apparently having major difficulty accessing their e-mail because of all the e-mails your signatures are generating! WOOOHOOOO! Well done & thank you!

If you haven't already signed the 'Corrective Rape' petition, please sign and share it with your friends:

http://change.org/petitions/view/south_africa_declare_corrective_rape_a_hate-crime

Unfortunately, despite this becoming the most popular petition of ALL TIME on Change.org, and clearly getting the attention of the minister, Lulekisizwe has still not heard a word from the Justice Department! We need a meeting with the Minister of Justice so we can discuss how 'corrective rape' victims are treated, the lack of police response, how long the court cases take, why so many of the dockets get 'lost' and why the rapists get out on such low bail. Please keep the pressure up!

Thanks to a donation from an ethical cosmetics company in the UK called Lush, we were able to get another, more secure place to stay and use as a safe-house for the victims, but the rapes and assaults are continuing. We are worn out and things are far from easy, especially at this time of the year when stress levels are very high.

The one thing that is giving us hope is all of you showing love and caring by signing and sharing the petition. We are thrilled, excited and very, very humbled by the support that every one of you have shown, and all we can say is thank you and please, please don't stop. Ask your friends to sign our petition:

Bless you all and have a great Festive Season,
Ndumi Funda & the Lulekisizwe team

National Solidarity Statement on Impact of Grand Jury Subpoenas on Students’ First Amendment Rights

December 29, 2010

“For if they take you in the morning, they will be coming for us that night.”

– James Baldwin, in an open letter to Angela Davis, November 19, 1970

As students at over fifty American universities, we unequivocally condemn the abuse of grand jury subpoenas to chill the exercise of First Amendment rights by university students and anti-war activists speaking and organizing against Israel’s continued oppression of the Palestinian people. Since September 24, 2010, the F.B.I. has served at least 24 grand jury subpoenas on students and activists in a secret investigation that many have called a witch-hunt. We call upon Attorney General Eric Holder and United States Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald to respect the civil rights and free speech of all those who support the Palestinian struggle for freedom by immediately withdrawing grand jury subpoenas which threaten the First Amendment rights of students and activists around the country.

The government’s assault on organizations and individuals who support the Palestinian struggle for freedom has become increasingly authoritarian. The abuse of laws criminalizing “material support for terrorism” is unprecedented and, had they been implemented at the time of South African apartheid, would have effectively criminalized broad American support for the anti-apartheid movement. At the apparent behest of US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, the government today has cast a net so wide that it has entangled journalists, college students, and peace activists. We know that a campaign so indiscriminate will seriously impinge on the First Amendment and other civil rights of people living in the United States. This will, in particular, affect active and outspoken students on university campuses, especially those of Palestinian descent.

It is not only our right but also our moral duty to speak and act against American foreign policy and its destructive impact on innocent people around the world. Today, America unfortunately stands behind Israel’s oppression of the Palestinian people with money, weaponry, and diplomatic support. We seek to reverse this situation so that American foreign policy stands on the side of people who work towards justice. We reject the government’s efforts to isolate the Palestinian people by severing them from their non-violent supporters abroad. Therefore we stand in solidarity with the victims of our government’s campaign both in America and around the globe.

If Attorney Fitzgerald’s campaign marks the morning of a new day, then we are certain of what awaits us in the night. Like Baldwin before us, we live in an age in which silence is not only criminal but suicidal – we shall, therefore, make as much noise as we can.

HOMOPHOBIC BIGOTS IN THE MELBOURNE JEWISH COMMUNITY WALLOWING IN THEIR PIG SLIME AFTER THE LATEST BESTIALITY POSTINGS ON A JEWISH BLOG

There is a Jewish homophobic bigot who starts all her postings on a Jewish zionist blog with b'h. For a long time I thought this meant she belonged to the Baha'i faith and then discovered she was supposed to be uttering some Jewish curse!

Her latest repulsive posting which could probably be reported to the anti-discrimination body in the state of Victoria for prosecution equates homosexuality with bestiality and paedophilia.

What will this person do when she discovers some of her nearest and dearest are gay, lesbian, transgender? Will she go and bury her head in the desert sands of Israel? Will she apologise for her disgusting behaviour?

No, she will say that her bible tells her it is so. However her bible was written by who knows who and who knows when by some ignorant backwater bigots who decided to make a go of "Jews are god's chosen people".

The main problem is that most of the Jews around are probably not Jewish at all and have ancestry which come from a variety of roots.

Whether she is able to read or not - it could be read to her - she should get a good dose of "The Invention of the Jewish People" by Shlomo Sand rammed down her bigoted throat and she could choke on the shock and horror she would experience!

HOMOPHOBIC AFL BIGOTS EXPOSED!!!

The AFL was supposed to have developed some new codes of conduct designed to reduce homophobia and also designed to be less misogynistic.

The latest outbreak of both has occurred because it would appear that a young female was abused by certain players and this person got revenge by posting some nude photos of some of the homophobes and misogynists behaving - as is their wont - at their worst.

Their behaviour has been unacceptable for many years, and when they are hoist with their own petards they suddenly cry foul.

It is their behaviour and antics which are foul and it is time this was all put to rest. For far too long, those administrators who are responsible for rules and regulations have paid lip service to all the problems besetting the different sporting codes, and hopefully they will have been given a further jolt which they deserve.

GAZA YOUTH BREAKS OUT

GAZAN YOUTH’S MANIFESTO FOR CHANGE

Fuck Hamas. Fuck Israel. Fuck Fatah. Fuck UN. Fuck UNWRA. Fuck USA!

We, the youth in Gaza, are so fed up with Israel, Hamas, the occupation, the violations of human rights and the indifference of the international community! We want to scream and break this wall of silence, injustice and indifference like the Israeli F16’s breaking the wall of sound; scream with all the power in our souls in order to release this immense frustration that consumes us because of this fucking situation we live in; we are like lice between two nails living a nightmare inside a nightmare, no room for hope, no space for freedom. We are sick of being caught in this political struggle; sick of coal dark nights with airplanes circling above our homes; sick of innocent farmers getting shot in the buffer zone because they are taking care of their lands; sick of bearded guys walking around with their guns abusing their power, beating up or incarcerating young people demonstrating for what they believe in; sick of the wall of shame that separates us from the rest of our country and keeps us imprisoned in a stamp-sized piece of land; sick of being portrayed as terrorists, homemade fanatics with explosives in our pockets and evil in our eyes; sick of the indifference we meet from the international community, the so-called experts in expressing concerns and drafting resolutions but cowards in enforcing anything they agree on; we are sick and tired of living a shitty life, being kept in jail by Israel, beaten up by Hamas and completely ignored by the rest of the world.

There is a revolution growing inside of us, an immense dissatisfaction and frustration that will destroy us unless we find a way of canalizing this energy into something that can challenge the status quo and give us some kind of hope. The final drop that made our hearts tremble with frustration and hopelessness happened 30rd November, when Hamas’ officers came to Sharek Youth Forum, a leading youth organization (www.sharek.ps) with their guns, lies and aggressiveness, throwing everybody outside, incarcerating some and prohibiting Sharek from working. A few days later, demonstrators in front of Sharek were beaten and some incarcerated. We are really living a nightmare inside a nightmare. It is difficult to find words for the pressure we are under. We barely survived the Operation Cast Lead, where Israel very effectively bombed the shit out of us, destroying thousands of homes and even more lives and dreams. They did not get rid of Hamas, as they intended, but they sure scared us forever and distributed post traumatic stress syndrome to everybody, as there was nowhere to run.

We are youth with heavy hearts. We carry in ourselves a heaviness so immense that it makes it difficult to us to enjoy the sunset. How to enjoy it when dark clouds paint the horizon and bleak memories run past our eyes every time we close them? We smile in order to hide the pain. We laugh in order to forget the war. We hope in order not to commit suicide here and now. During the war we got the unmistakable feeling that Israel wanted to erase us from the face of the earth. During the last years Hamas has been doing all they can to control our thoughts, behaviour and aspirations. We are a generation of young people used to face missiles, carrying what seems to be a impossible mission of living a normal and healthy life, and only barely tolerated by a massive organization that has spread in our society as a malicious cancer disease, causing mayhem and effectively killing all living cells, thoughts and dreams on its way as well as paralyzing people with its terror regime. Not to mention the prison we live in, a prison sustained by a so-called democratic country.

History is repeating itself in its most cruel way and nobody seems to care. We are scared. Here in Gaza we are scared of being incarcerated, interrogated, hit, tortured, bombed, killed. We are afraid of living, because every single step we take has to be considered and well-thought, there are limitations everywhere, we cannot move as we want, say what we want, do what we want, sometimes we even cant think what we want because the occupation has occupied our brains and hearts so terrible that it hurts and it makes us want to shed endless tears of frustration and rage!

We do not want to hate, we do not want to feel all of this feelings, we do not want to be victims anymore. ENOUGH! Enough pain, enough tears, enough suffering, enough control, limitations, unjust justifications, terror, torture, excuses, bombings, sleepless nights, dead civilians, black memories, bleak future, heart aching present, disturbed politics, fanatic politicians, religious bullshit, enough incarceration! WE SAY STOP! This is not the future we want!

We want three things. We want to be free. We want to be able to live a normal life. We want peace. Is that too much to ask? We are a peace movement consistent of young people in Gaza and supporters elsewhere that will not rest until the truth about Gaza is known by everybody in this whole world and in such a degree that no more silent consent or loud indifference will be accepted.

This is the Gazan youth’s manifesto for change!

We will start by destroying the occupation that surrounds ourselves, we will break free from this mental incarceration and regain our dignity and self respect. We will carry our heads high even though we will face resistance. We will work day and night in order to change these miserable conditions we are living under. We will build dreams where we meet walls.

We only hope that you – yes, you reading this statement right now! – can support us. In order to find out how, please write on our wall or contact us directly: freegazayouth@hotmail.com

We want to be free, we want to live, we want peace.

WIKILEAKS SUPPORTED BY LETTERS IN THE SUNDAY AGE 18 dECEMBER 2010

A double standard

December 19, 2010

CHRIS Berg (''The weight of the word'', 12/12) points out that Julian Assange has done nothing more than traditional newspapers have always done, albeit on a larger scale using novel technology. Letter writer Michael Burd accuses Assange of espionage and treason. Nola Martin says he cannot expect consular assistance for embarrassing the government (Letters, 12/12). Officials in the US and Australia are yet to announce that they have found any crime with which he can be charged.

Remember the US government illegally leaked against [former CIA officer] Valerie Plame, putting US informants' lives at risk, and the Australian government against Andrew Wilkie in retaliation for revelations that governments were lying about Saddam's WMD.

The Australian government's spineless refusal to repudiate in the strongest terms calls from the US for one of its citizens to be assassinated, executed or treated like a terrorist and the Prime Minister and Attorney-General trashing his right to the presumption of innocence shows that this government has no more interest in protections inherent in the rule of law developed since the Magna Carta than did the Howard government in the cases of Mamdouh Habib and David Hicks.

PHILIP SHEHAN, Brunswick

Diplomacy damaged

THE Sunday Age editorial says: ''Attempts to silence Mr Assange and those who work with him threaten the free flow of information that makes democracy possible.''

I contend that the opposite is true; if diplomats cannot exchange communications in strict confidence, then the flow of information that facilitates effective democratic government will be impeded. The natural reaction of diplomats to this breach of trust will be to become more secretive; the effect will be the opposite of what journalists want.

The damage will be to diplomacy in the free world. Chinese, Russian, Iranian and North Korean cables are not being published around the globe. Burmese generals will now know what the US knows about their secrets. The leaks, in effect, undermine freedom, rather than defend it.

ROBERT EVERSON , Dandenong

Too close to home

ALL those baying for Julian Assange's blood should look a little harder at their preferred political ideologies.

Most of us would condemn the system in Burma or that of Robert Mugabe. How strange it is that when scandals are exposed closer to home some of us become exceedingly agitated.

PAUL MURCHISON, Kingsbury

A rare glimpse

IT IS interesting the way the recent leaked cables published by WikiLeaks humanises politicians and the effect that this has.

Cables that highlight Kevin Rudd's flaws and his disconcerting recommendations on how to deal with China strip away Kevin Rudd the politician and reveal Kevin Rudd the human. This allows one a momentary glimpse of reality, as one cannot truly gauge the nature of politicians and the dynamics of politics through press statements and government policy.

When the flaws of a politician are exposed, the government quickly acts to quell the public's view of the importance of these flaws. We see the extent to which the political system is not set up to facilitate humans, but politicians who hold no embarrassing, unpopular views and only discuss things when the public is watching.

By the repetition of this representation of our leaders we soon forget that they are human and accept the belief that what is seen by the public is all that is happening in Parliament.

Leaked cables such as these remind the public that politicians are secretly human with flaws and opinions, and that much more goes on in politics than is let on. This is a valuable service as it encourages critical thinking and analysis from within the public - and that is essential to keep any government in check.

SAM TALBOT-CANON, West End, Brisbane

Reclaiming the ideals

ONE crucial question seems to be overlooked by the WikiLeaks and Assange critics and that is why are so many Americans prepared to ''leak''?

Are they traitors? Do they hate their own country? Or are they (as I believe) angry and frustrated because the corrupt and unprincipled have taken over their country and all its institutions?

Does it ever occur to the critics of WikiLeaks that those who ''leak'' actually believe in the principles of Benjamin Franklin and the constitution he inspired?

Perhaps they believe that it is not OK to go to war based on a lie and that it is not the American way to humiliate and torture prisoners of war and it is not OK to shoot at civilians and God did not give them the right to redraw borders and claim all the world's resources as their own.

Those who ''leak'' are desperate people who want to reclaim their once great and noble country from the liars, thieves and political prostitutes.

MICHAEL MILIC, Geelong

Remembering Jefferson

CHRIS Berg's article in your paper could have finished with one additional par.

As Thomas Jefferson said: ''Our liberty depends on the freedom of the press [read ''media''] and that cannot be limited without being lost.''

Please keep reminding Julia G and the Americans of this, as well as the leaders of other democracies - such as Britain and Sweden - and tell them we know that they are not perfect communicators and it's OK.

But inventing crimes or changing laws to cover up is unforgivable.

JOHN MATHESON, Alphington

WIKILEAKS - IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ASSANGE, THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE HELD DIRECTLY ACCOUNTABLE!

Julian Assange is in an awful situation. Although he is an Australian citizen, the noises coming from the federal government in relation to his protection are far from reassuring.

However, no matter what further spin all these governments are trying to put on Wikileaks, the truth of the matter is that it is not Wikileaks which is producing the information - it is people from inside the US government departments, and the embarrassments are continuing to come thick and fast.

The latest ones, and ones we have all been waiting for are about Israel and Iran, and hopefully there is much more that will come out about the USA, Australia and all the other western countries and their involvements in the ghastly support of the Israeli regime which has shown itself to be more and more like the South African apartheid regime.

It is interesting to note that although Assange is being held in a British prison, despite apparently having not broken any British laws, the leaks continue and the embarrassed governments are trying to wriggle out of the statements in the reports on a daily basis.

Whatever the ultimate outcomes will be for Julian Assange and Wikileaks, he and they will have done the greatest service to humankind in exposing government and media lies than any other activists in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Long may the exposures continue!

UN AND US OFFICIALS CALL FOR GAY RIGHTS

***U.N.**, U.S.** Officials Call for Gay Rights*

*Ban Ki-Moon and Susan Rice Call for End to Laws Around the World That
Criminalize Homosexuality, Marking Human Rights Day*

* (AP) * U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon called for an end to laws around the
world that criminalize homosexuality, stressing the need to pay more
urgent attention to gay and gender identity rights on Friday as the
world marked Human Rights Day.

"Today, many nations have modern constitutions that guarantee essential
rights and liberties. And yet, homosexuality is considered a crime in
more than 70 countries," Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said. "That is
not right."

Ban said the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the U.N.
General Assembly on Dec. 10, 1948, "is not called the 'partial'
declaration of human rights. It is not the 'sometimes' declaration of
human rights. It is the universal declaration, guaranteeing all human
beings their basic human rights - without exception."

The U.N. chief said that during recent trips to Africa he urged leaders
to do away with laws criminalizing homosexuality, and that in Malawi he
was able to help secure the release of a young gay couple sentenced to
14 years in prison.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu also spoke by teleconference to the high-level
gathering organized at U.N. headquarters by advocates for lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgender people, comparing their struggle to the fight
for an end to apartheid in his native South Africa.

U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice echoed Ban's remarks, and said that the
United Nations must send a strong message that people should not be
tortured and killed because they are gay.

Rice said she was "incensed" by a recent vote in a General Assembly
committee that left out any mention of sexual orientation from a
resolution condemning the extrajudicial killing of vulnerable people
worldwide. Previous resolutions had included the mention.

The American ambassador said that the United States will sponsor a U.N.
amendment to restore the reference to killings based on sexual
orientation. "We're going to stand firm on this basic principle," she said.

Rights groups welcomed Rice's announcement, and called on all U.N.
member states to support the amendment.

"Words do have a meaning at the U.N.," said Boris Dittrich of Human
Rights Watch. "Reintroducing the reference to sexual orientation in the
resolution could help put an end to the hateful killing of people based
on their sexual orientation or gender identity."

Rice also said that she, like President Obama, "was extremely
disappointed" on Thursday when Senate Republicans failed to repeal the
U.S. military's 17-year-old ban on openly gay military troops.

The Senate's 57-40 test vote fell three votes short of the 60 needed to
advance. Included in a broader defense policy bill, the measure to
eliminate the so-called "don't ask, don't tell policy" passed the House
last spring.

"That law violates fundamental American principles of fairness,
integrity, and equality," said Rice. "We only weaken our national
security and diminish our military readiness by depriving ourselves of
the service of patriots determined to defend the country they love."

"Today as we celebrate the birthday of the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights, we must recall that its drafters insisted that it be truly
universal," said Rice. "We must all do our part, here at the United
Nations and in our own countries, to ensure that no gay man need fear
persecution, that no lesbian need fear discrimination, and that no
transgender person need fear assault."

MELBOURNE'S HOMOPHOBIC JEWS

A recently published book:

The Invention of the Jewish People by Shlomo Sand, (translated by Yael Lotan) published by Verso 2010

should be read by those who call themselves Jewish - and those to whom Jews and Judaism are enigmas - or worse!

It should also be read by those Melbourne Jews who subscribe to the theory that "god wrote in the bible (or wrote the bible - which is even worse!) and therefore it must be so" and who start their blogs or posts with symbols such as b'h which presumably indicates that they are actually of the baha'i faith and therefore not Jewish at all.

An analysis of these Melbourne Jews indicates a level of homophobia matched by the cristian fundamentalists in the USA and the muslim fundamentalists in countries such as Iran and many muslim countries in Africa such as Somalia, Egypt and others too numerous to mention, to say nothing of the homophobic murders in Israel (the only demockery in the middle east - ha ha ha!!!) of young gay and lesbian activists in Tel Aviv not so long ago.

Melbourne Jews who quote the holocaust quicker than you could drop a pin in order to whine about Jewish persecution and murder, forgetting about all those others murdered by the nazis during the holocaust, such as homosexuals, Romanies, Poles, communists, intellectually and physically disabled people and other untermenschen too numerous to mention! go on to state they hate homosexuals and they should all be removed from the face of the earth!

Then we have some organisations which are called Jewish and are about as Jewish as the Pope (although if you looked into this nazi pope's antecedence it wouldn't surprise one to find Jewish connections). This means organisations such as the so-called "Jewish Community Council of Victoria" who are reputed to have set up a "reference group" to address issues relating to gay, lesbian, transgender and other members of our communities, but this "reference group" is such a secret that no one knows who its members are, when they meet, what they discuss, what conclusions they reach, and what policies they have in place to deal with the homophobic disease which flourishes in the murky depths of these deranged people and "organisations". In fact it is so secret that no one knows whether it actually exists at all!!

One of my colleagues in the blogosphere has written extensively about the effect homophobia, which is rampant amongst the bigots and racists amongst the Jewish peoples of Melbourne, has on young people finding out about their sexuality, needing support, not getting it and becoming depressed or ideation of suicide or actually suiciding.

Not one of the so-called leaders of these Melbourne Jews has the gumption to publicly state that homophobia must stop and the damage to the young - and old - Jews of Melbourne is actually harming the Jewish communities.

One can only conclude from all of this that hypocrisy is alive and well and prospering amongst those Jews who spend their lives perpetuating the memory of the death camps of Europe while creating a holocaust amongst young gay, lesbian, transgender and HIV-AIDS people in our communities.

Finally, Melbourne Jews should get hold of the latest copy of a US journal called "the Intelligence Report" - Winter 2010|Issue 140 - published by the Southern Poverty Law Centre - which has as its lead article the growth of homophobia and hate crimes against gay, lesbian and transgender people in the USA".

On its front cover it highlights the article:
